Language

Such a huge subject!  Where to begin?  We thought we’d give you a quick perspective on language from the viewpoint of modelling it.

As the adult, it is our responsibility to model language for children in exactly the same way as we model behaviour.  In the Montessori classroom, a great example of this is that we ask the children to use an “inside voice”.  As adults, we likewise use this quiet (er) voice to talk to the children.

The power of language is huge.  The tone we use, the words we choose, when and where we decide to intervene, how we address not just children, but anyone around us…….. – the list is vast.  However, what we do know is that, as with behaviour,  children learn and absorb what they see.  If they see adults responding in a kind and thoughtful manner, it is one that they can try to emulate.

As we always say, being an adult in a classroom situation is often easier than being the parent, at home and dealing with the ups and downs of home life.  This is often simply, because, at school one is not emotionally invested in the same way.  However, there are some solutions that, if we can try to put into everyday use, simply become a habit.  An example of this is when we are tackling “assumptions.”  It is sometimes easy either to assume that a child needs our help, when they don’t or, to assume that we, as the adult have the full facts of any given situation, when often we don’t!  How much better to ask the question – Can I help? – when our children are crying and screaming at each other. Or asking the same question, when we come into a room and see a situation and “take sides” – normally based on prior form!

Modelling language is a life skill that informs our children from day one and something that they will take on into their own life.  Making small alterations in the way we communicate with everyone around us – but especially with children - can bring about huge change in the way they learn to manage and respond to situations.

The Parent Collaborative runs parenting workshops on a whole range of subjects – language included – if you are interested in learning more – give us a call or drop us a line – we’d love to share information we have learned along the way!
