Behaviour as Communication

All behaviour is a form of communication, from the child who stands like a ‘scarecrow’ in the corridor waiting to be dressed, as everyone else is rushing out of the front door …….to the teenager who is suddenly layering on more make-up than any of their peers.

How do we respond? Often the way in which we respond to any kind of behaviour, will either positively or negatively reinforce the message, and as a result the child or teenage, will continue to be the ‘scarecrow’ or, hide behind the make-up.

We are all different and we all respond to situations in a variety of different ways.  As parents we find ourselves navigating the sometimes bumpy road that is our parenting journey rarely asking for help. Or, if we do ask for help, we might get the response, from a friend, ‘oh my child never did that….’ Or, from one of our own parents, ‘teenagers these days wear far too much make-up anyway.’  Clearly, we are generalising here, but the point we wanted to make, is that we all need help and support to parent. It is in the main a rewarding and amazing journey, but there are times it can push us all to the limits – we know, we’ve been there – and this year has particularly challenging for all parents……

…..Which is why we want you to see us as your ‘live, friendly parenting manual’.  We have put our support online in the form of six, 2-hour sessions looking at, ‘Behaviour as Communication’.  We ask you about the challenges you are facing and then support you to better understand what’s behind the behaviours you’re witnessing in your family.  The sessions include a bit of child development, but mainly focuses on helping you find the best solutions for your family, because we know, EACH AND EVERY FAMILY IS UNIQUE. There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to parenting and so we believe support should be equally bespoke.

We’ve not only parented 6 children between us, but we’ve also had the luxury of having 40 years seeing children in the context of their peers.  We’d love to be able to help you decode the messages your children are sending, so that you can all get back to having fun.
